According to the internet, to chop wood and carry water is an old saying with numerous interpretations.

Roughly, it means to regularly attend to the basic duties of life. Perform the daily acts that sustain you.

There is a deeper meaning implied, which is to be present with the activities you do. When you are chopping wood, chop wood. When you are carrying water, carry water.  

Whatever you are doing, do it mindfully, deliberately, and carefully. Do it with presence, attention and intention.
